Award-winning writer, poet, performer and rights activist, Penny Pepper presents her unique one-woman show Lost in Spaces, directed by award winning director Bethany Pitts on tour, having previewed at Soho Theatre and Dadafest in 2014 to critical acclaim.
Written and performed by Pepper, Lost in Spaces interweaves the personal and the universal, drawing on long-kept journals mixed with poetry, spoken word and music with composition and accompaniment by Joanne Cox. The show charts life from fragile beginnings in the 60s, facing illness and disappointment, to fighting Thatcher in 80s Britain, finding new friends and independence in a hard-won move to London, corresponding with Morrissey and immersion in the indie music scene with her iconic band Spiral Sky.
In a tumultuous, life-long quest to carve out her own unique space in our contrary world, all strands and spaces come full circle to current battles with the government’s harsh austerity measures. Labels are subverted, barriers are broken. Spaces are redefined. Friends and lovers found – and lost. From the haunting Hymn to Daddy, to the raging sarcasm of Handbagged and a very personal invite to Cripplegate Town, her work provides a remarkable chronicle of our times.
